CONNECT: The Grandparent-Grandchild Relationship

Whether near or far, the grandparent-grandchild relationship is a special one. It brings many benefits to both!

Grandparents help children form an understanding of healthy relationship with others. They provide a sense of safety and can be a source of uninterrupted attention which builds a child’s self-esteem.  Grandparents are often playful and there’s no better way to learn than through play and fun.

“Young or old, people can affect our personalities”, Mark Matousek says in an article entitled “We’re Wired To Connect”, published in the January/February issue of AARP Magazine. The innocence of youth certainly has a positive effect on everyone. Studies also show that grandparents benefit from the act of giving to their grandchildren.

Grandparents Day is just around the corner.  We hope you are able to enjoy it with your grandparent(s)/grandchild(ren).  We’ve put together a list of questions that grandchildren may enjoy asking their grandparents.  Now is the perfect time to ask and record the answers. You may have heard some of the answers before.  Some questions may be new.  Either way, we hope you’ll write down the information and treasure it forever.

The following are from a book entitled “Grandmas and Grandpas, You Lovable Old Things” – A Helen Exley Giftbook

“A Granddad is a person you never forget, never. I’m proud that he’s my granddad. And I’ll never forget his hand in mine as we walk down the street together.” Suzanne Cairns, Age 13

“Her mask was of wrinkled skin attached onto her face. It was not really her because it did not fit, it belonged to another time and place. But the more she talked and as I watched her, she shed the mask from her face. A light as new as spring shone in her eyes and in her movements a youthful grace.” ~ taken from a poem entitled “My special Grandmother”, written by Jacqueline Solomons, Age 9
