Laurelwood Memory Care Groundbreaking

Last month, we were very excited to break ground on the Memory Care Neighborhood at Laurelwood. The neighborhood will consist of eight Assisted Living apartment homes, an open kitchen with a dining table, and a dedicated living room.

The Memory Care Neighborhood is an addition to the existing Laurelwood Assisted Living building. Memory Care residents will be highly integrated with the greater Laurelwood community, including sharing meals in the Laurelwood Dining Room.

There’s So Much To Do at The Highlands

The Laurelwood Life Enrichment Team is busy creating an extensive activities plan for our Memory Care residents. It is our goal for all residents to live at their highest personal potential and to Enjoy Life! Activities take place throughout each day, in the evenings, and on weekends. Residents of The Highlands are as busy as they want to be!

Music & Memory® at The Living Center

As a Music & Memory® Certified Care Organization, The Living Center at The Highlands at Pittsford is embracing the powerful benefits of personalized music in our continuous effort to offer the highest quality Skilled Nursing care.

Music can transport an individual to another place and time, often unlocking fond memories from youth or life’s special events.

This exceptional, personalized music program enhances quality of life and is grounded in extensive neuroscience research.

How does it work?

Individual, personalized playlists are created and saved to MP3 players. In addition to music, books, radio shows, faith-based messages, personal messages, and other media can be added to the player by family members.

How does this make a difference?

  • – Beloved music helps to reduce depression and anxiety and can moderate pain.
  • – Participants are happier, more social, and are more receptive care and family visits.
  • – Personalized music can help reduce reliance on anti-psychotic, anti-depressant, and pain medications.

In April 2012, a documentary about the Music & Memory organization’s work, Alive Inside: A Story of Music and Memory, was previewed at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City. Here is a video clip of one man who was reawakened by listening to his Cab Calloway favorites.
