Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON)

The primary purpose of this position is to collaborate with the Director of Nursing (DON) in leading innovation and ensuring the highest standards throughout the nursing department. The ADON will help ensure that all resident care is delivered in compliance with all state and federal regulations. The ADON will also provide direct management and oversight of project management for nurse managers and oversee and ensure staff education compliance per state requirements.
- Assists with developing and participates in the Nursing Administration on-call schedule, supporting the Nursing Team 24 hours per day.
- Works with the DON on developing, implementing, and maintaining a master staffing plan sufficient to meet the 24-hour needs of the Residents.
- Supports minimum staffing guidelines and implements a plan sufficient to meet the 24-hour needs of the Residents.
Works on (with the DON) the implementation and oversight of a formal Quality of Care programs and nursing committees as needed. - Along with the DON, assures availability of adequate supplies and equipment to meet the nursing care needs of the Residents.
- Advises, consults with, and reports to administration on Nursing Department functions and Resident Care.
- Keeps current in the field of nursing, through networking, conferences, conventions, journals, and workshops.
- Communicates effectively with all other department managers, enhancing interdisciplinary cooperation and team approach.
- Develop, implement, and maintain an effective Infection Prevention and Control Program in accordance with CDC, CMS, and local public health guidance.
- Conduct surveillance, tracking, and trend analysis of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).
- Investigate infection outbreaks and implement corrective actions.
- Educate staff, residents, and families on infection control practices and standard precautions.
- Ensure appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE), hand hygiene, and environmental cleaning protocols.
Antibiotic Stewardship:
•Collaborate with medical staff and pharmacy to lead the facility’s Antibiotic Stewardship Program.
• Monitor antibiotic use and resistance patterns.
• Promote appropriate antibiotic prescribing and administration practices.
• Educate nursing staff and prescribers on antimicrobial stewardship principles.
Vaccination Oversight:
• Coordinate the administration and documentation of resident and staff vaccinations, including:
• Influenza
• COVID-19
• Pneumococcal
• Other CDC-recommended vaccines for long-term care - Monitors use of clinical computer software, knowledgeable of its function and capabilities.
- Assumes the role of acting DON in the absence of him/her, monitoring overall function of the nursing department as required.
- Oversees required education minutes for the facility staff members per regulations.
- Acts as a resource person to all members of nursing administration (Nurse Managers, charge nurses, nursing supervisors).
- Assist with hiring, training, teaching, and monitoring of nursing department staff.
- Provides direct management of supplemental staff (In-house contract employees and outside agency staff).
- Ensures nursing staff follow departmental procedures and policies.
- Assist in operationalizing larger strategic visions across the nursing department.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
• Must be a graduate of an approved school of nursing with a current NYS nursing license required. Advanced degree is preferred.
• Must possess strong organizational skills, strong effective communication skills, and be levelheaded in emergency situations. Should possess the spirit of cooperation and enthusiasm in order to create an atmosphere conducive to growth.
• Must have at least five years progressive LTC experience.
Language:
Ability to read, analyze and interpret common journals, reports, and legal documents.
Supervision:
• Administers personnel policies and procedures to ensure fair and equal treatment of all employees.
• Along with HR, assists with hiring.
• Evaluates, trains and orients/directs new employees.
