Dear Residents, Family, and Friends,

We hope this letter finds you well. In response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, New York State has deployed the National Guard to nursing homes and hospitals across the state. The Highlands Living Center has accepted this offer of assistance and is fortunate to receive assistance from six National Guard members, who arrived for orientation on Feb. 11.

They are non-clinical professionals, so they will not be providing direct resident care. They will provide valuable assistance in non-clinical departments such as culinary, recreation, and facilities. A National Guard sergeant assigns and oversees their work tasks. Each National Guard member will partner with one of our staff members while on duty.

The National Guard members will be with us through at least March 15. We are grateful for this support and assistance and look forward to welcoming these men and women while they are in our community. As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions.

Sincerely,

Sam Busari, LNHA

Dear Residents, Family, and Friends,

We strive to keep our residents, their families, and loved ones up to date on our building’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. New York State has recently made two changes to the rules around Nursing Home Visitation in response to the Omicron variant. Firstly, we are now required to verify proof of a negative COVID-19 test for all visitors. We are implementing this requirement on Friday, January 141h New York State State has provided us with rapid COVID-19 tests. We will provide a test to each visitor when they arrive to visit. The visitor will self-administer the test which takes about 15 minutes, instructions will be provided. At this time, we will not be accepting results from “at home” COVID-19 rapid tests, which were conducted outside the building. We can accept PCR test results, conducted outside the building, as proof of a negative test. For PCR test results the sample collection date must be within two days of the visit. At this time, we are asking visitors to test before every visit. Secondly, visitors will be required to wear a non-surgical paper mask, not a cloth mask, while visiting. We will continue to have non-surgical paper masks available for all visitors. The Highlands Living Center will also continue to require visitors to wear a face shield while in the building. The goal of these new measures is to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 to our residents. It is important to note, no test for COVID-19 is 100% accurate. The best way to protect ourselves and residents is through wearing a mask and face shield, hand hygiene, and social distancing. Thank you for helping us prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our building.

I am also required to inform you, per Federal regulations, that two additional staff members have tested positive for COVID-19. These staff members will remain out of work until they are fully recovered and cleared to return. We continue to closely monitor all residents for signs and symptoms of COVID-19, and test when indicated.

We will continue to update you on COVID-19 via email, automatic phone calls, and through our website. Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Dear Residents, Family, and Friends,

We promised to keep you up to date on COVID-19 as it affects our building. Since our last letter on 12/31/21, five additional staff members have tested positive for COVID-19. These staff members are from different departments and we do not believe that they contracted the virus while at HLC. These staff members will remain out of work until they are fully recovered and cleared to return. Visitation is not impacted at this time. Some of these staff members had close contact with our second-floor residents. As a precaution all second floor residents, who consent, will be tested for COVID-19 twice over the next several days, per Federal guidelines. Additionally, we will be temporarily suspending communal dining on the second floor and asking residents to wear masks during group activities. We hope to discontinue these measures once the test results confirm that there has been no spread on the unit. We are taking every step recommended to contain the spread of this virus in order to protect our residents and staff members. These steps include:

  • Screening staff members and visitors before they enter the facility
  • Supporting all residents’ health needs daily, including screening for signs of COVID-19
  • Universal masking and face shields for all entering our facility
  • Testing for COVID when indicated
  • Any staff member who shows signs of COVID-19, or tests positive, receives appropriate medical care for as long as needed and staff members who test positive for COVID-19 do not return to work until they have fully recovered and been cleared by the Health Department to return to work.
