The primary purpose of your job is to protect life and property, to prevent crime or violation of institutional
regulation, to suppress criminal or unacceptable activity, to apprehend and assist in the prosecution of
violators of law where necessity and law indicate, to regulate, where necessary, acceptable conduct (traffic,
use of facility, etc.), and to assist all users of facilities in any proper matter whether requested or not.

***Assists with receptionist responsibilities including answering phones.
*Officers shall perform their duties in an efficient, courteous and orderly manner using patience and good
judgement at all times. They shall refrain from harsh, profane or insolent language. They shall be
courteous and civil at all times in dealing with one and other.
*Conducts continuous patrols of campus buildings, grounds, residential areas, and parking areas to prevent
and detect fire, theft, vandalism, illegal entry and safety hazards.
*Responsible for maintaining walkway around the Highlands Living Center (shoveling and salting).
*Locks and unlocks nursing facility doors as scheduled. May lock and unlock doors at other times if
legitimate need for access has been established by the requesting party. Maintains familiarity for all areas
for which key access is available by security personnel. Maintains security of all keys entrusted to officers
and the department.
*Observes, investigates and reports violations of law or nursing facility policies or procedures which
disrupt the safety, security and orderly operation of the nursing facility. May take action to see that serious
violations are ceased. May be required to pursue and/or detain individuals or take temporary custody of
property in accordance with established rules and regulations. May be required to escort unauthorized
personnel from restricted areas of the nursing facility or off the grounds entirely. If involved in an incident
resulting in arrest, all necessary paperwork will be completed and necessary court appearances by the
*Any unusual conditions in the nursing facility or malfunctions of heating, plumbing, electrical system or
elevators will be promptly reported to the Maintenance Department. If no immediate response is available,
officers will take steps to minimize further damage, hazard or inconvenience while awaiting appropriate
personnel to correct the problem.
*Performs a variety of traffic control functions including patrol and monitoring all parking areas, rerouting
traffic as necessary, keeping Fire Lanes accessible, investigating and reporting motor vehicle accidents, and
monitoring and reporting snow and icy conditions. Escort persons to and from all parking areas as
*Receives lost and found property, secures along with nursing verify clothing of deceased or discharged
patients, provides emergency delivery and transport off nursing facility grounds, may accept and deliver
packages within the nursing facility.
*Investigates reports and follow-ups on security related incidents, makes reports to the Police Department
when appropriate. Documents complaints, visitor accidents and makes appropriate referrals for corrective
action. Responds promptly to all calls.
*Actively participates in internal or external disasters according to responsibilities outlined in the
appropriate disaster plan. Assist the Fire Department and other agencies that respond from outside the
nursing facility. Participates in respective drills of these plans and makes observations for improved
response when appropriate.
*Maintains a current working knowledge of applicable laws, nursing facility policies, department policies
and procedures. Seeks clarification of issues requiring interpretation. Must be able to apply the above to
individual situations as encountered.
*Performs other duties as assigned.
The working conditions are pleasant. The employee may on occasion be exposed to bodily waste, strong
odors, and body fluids, which could contain diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis B, etc. Universal Precautions
must be performed at all times. Some occasional exposure to contaminated items, variable temperatures,
damp and wet conditions.
NYS Security Certification Required!
Education & Experience: AAS Criminal Justice, Prefer six months experience in health care institution.
Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers or members of the community.
Basic mathematical abilities.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with emergency situations. Ability to interpret a variety of
instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hand to finger, handle or
feel, talk and hear. The employee frequently is required to walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms. The
employee will be on their feet for 80-90% of the shift time. The employee is occasionally required to
climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50
pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close/distant vision, color/peripheral vision
and depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
The employee is required to ensure personal safety, monitor work environment and make necessary
improvements while ensuring the safety of others.
