Rehabilitation

Orthopaedic, Post-Acute, and Post-Operative Rehabilitation

The Highlands Living Center has a team of professionals dedicated to getting you back to your regular routine. We’ll work closely with your medical specialist or orthopaedic surgeon to create a customized rehabilitation program for you.

Medical Team

Our team consists of UR Medicine physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants who provide 24-hour coverage and deliver “Medicine of The Highest Order” to each and every individual. They work with your surgeon to coordinate and manage your medical needs, including:

  • Pain management
  • Lab work monitoring
  • Medication management
  • Chronic condition management

Physical Therapy Team

Physical therapy is the key to restoring as much mobility as possible. Our licensed physical therapists are available to work with patients up to seven days a week. Therapy sessions include mobility and strengthening exercises as well as stair training. Prior to discharge, we will assist to ensure your equipment needs are met and that you have a smooth transition home.

Occupational Therapy Team

Occupational therapy is designed to help you regain the ability to accomplish Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), such as dressing, bathing, and toileting. We work to improve your ability to function independently at home and help build upper body strength. In addition, we work to improve your standing, balance, and endurance. Occupational therapy sessions are conducted up to seven days a week in addition to your physical therapy sessions.

Speech Therapy

Our full-time speech/language pathologist provides integral help with communication, voice disorders, and swallowing for those recovering from strokes and other illnesses.

Nursing Team

The Living Center nursing team includes registered and practical nurses, certified nursing assistants (CNAs) and wound care/infection control professionals. They work together to acquaint you with the rehabilitation process and assist you throughout your stay. They attend to daily personal care needs, such as dressing, bathing, toileting, getting in/out of bed, and walking.

Our nurses also provide the following support:

  • Administer medications
  • Monitor vital signs (blood pressure, temperature, etc.)
  • Check lab results (i.e., Coumadin levels)
  • Incision site care
  • IV therapy
  • Oxygen care
  • Wound care
